This page is in memory of John Downing, Lt Cdr R.N. (retired), who served for 31 years in the Royal Navy, much of it in the Fleet Air Arm. John had a warm and vibrant personality and enjoyed living life to the full, but in later years was troubled by some of the traumas he experienced during his long military career, and as a result struggled with post traumatic stress disorder. During this period of his later life he was greatly helped by Combat Stress, the veterans' mental health charity. We, John's family, would therefore warmly welcome donations to Combat Stress, to support their invaluable help for others similarly afflicted.
So sorry to learn of John's passing. I was an MOD civilian & he was my boss on the 3rd floor of MOD's Main Bldg in the early 80s & during OP Corporate. I hadn't seen him in several years. RIP John & Sue.
Sue and I were at school together - and I only met John once - many years ago - and I was impressed by the warmth of his personality
Have great memories of John and visit to Chislehurst
